The visitors started the match with a new lineup, with Thomas Frank making some changes after their midweek game. One of the new players, Destiny Udogie, was involved early on, finding space down the left and squaring the ball for Lucas Bergvall. However, Jan Paul van Hecke intervened to clear the danger.
Brighton took the lead against the run of play on the eighth minute when Yankuba Minteh beat the offside trap and scored his second goal in as many meetings against Tottenham on this ground. The Seagulls were unbeaten in their previous six games when Minteh scored, and they looked set to continue that streak after Richarlison and Wilson Odobert missed their chances.
Bergvall was dispossessed in his own third, allowing Yasin Ayari to score from long range, doubling Brighton's lead. The scoreline was harsh on Tottenham, who had been the better team for large parts of the first half, and they deservedly reduced the deficit just before halftime through Richarlison, who converted Mohammed Kudus' shot and scored from close range.
Tottenham continued to pressure Brighton after the restart, with new signing Xavi Simons being introduced from the bench. He was tasked with breaking a trend that had seen nine of Tottenham's last 12 matches have the halftime result replicated at the final whistle. Simons nearly made things harder for his team when his long-range shot was saved by Bart Verbruggen.
However, Simons began to make his presence felt, creating chances for his team. He saw a shot saved by Verbruggen and then dragged another effort wide of the target. Tottenham's pressure was relentless, and they finally equalized in the final 10 minutes.
Simons found Kudus, who delivered an inviting cross that was deflected into the bottom corner by Van Hecke, prompting celebrations in the away end. Unfortunately for Tottenham, Brighton composed themselves and held on to a draw, but squandering the lead leaves the Seagulls with just five points from their first five games, while Tottenham remain unbeaten in their last three away league games under Thomas Frank.
