The new contract does not include an option for a 12-month extension. At 33, Courtois has chosen to commit to Real's policy of rolling 12-month deals for players over 30 years old.

Andriy Lunin, Real's backup goalkeeper, is happy to stay with the team and learn from Courtois. He was also a target for Villarreal, but prefers to remain at Real Madrid.
