Nico O'Reilly: A Strong Candidate for England's Left-Back Position - AsianBookie News Nico O'Reilly: A Strong Candidate for England's Left-Back Position
Friday, December 12, 2025 - 23 hours ago

Nico O'Reilly, a 20-year-old left-back for Manchester City, has impressed with his consistent performances in the Premier League and Champions League. His standout display against Real Madrid in a 2-1 win has highlighted his potential to be England's first choice left-back for the 2026 World Cup. England's left-back position is currently considered one of its weakest areas, with Thomas Tuchel, the national team coach, needing to make a decision on who to choose for the biggest tournament in football. O'Reilly's impressive numbers and performances make a strong case for him to be the first choice.

Since breaking into the first-team, O'Reilly has demonstrated his skills, making 35 tackles, winning 75 duels at a success rate of 51.0%, and being dribbled past only nine times in the Premier League. He has also shown his attacking threat, creating 12 chances and making 11 successful dribbles across 14 Premier League games.

One of his notable performances was against Liverpool, where he successfully restricted Mohamed Salah, who was unable to complete a single dribble against him. O'Reilly has also contributed to his team with a goal and three assists in the Premier League.

Tuchel has limited options at left-back, with Luke Shaw, the current first choice, not featuring in a national team camp this year. Myles Lewis-Skelly and Tino Livramento are also in the running, but O'Reilly's numbers and performances make him a strong contender.

Tuchel has already shown his faith in O'Reilly by giving him his first caps in World Cup qualification wins over Albania and Serbia. O'Reilly impressed, making three tackles, winning nine duels, and having 117 accurate passes in 180 minutes of play.

At this moment, O'Reilly stands out as the best option for England's left-back position, with his numbers and performances surpassing those of his competitors. While there is still time for other players to improve, O'Reilly's place on the plane to the 2026 World Cup looks likely.
